Clinical Hematology

Clinical hematology is a specialized branch of medicine that focuses on the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood and blood-forming organs. It encompasses a broad range of conditions involving red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, the bone marrow, lymphatic system, and the body’s coagulation (clotting) mechanisms. Among the most common issues managed in clinical hematology are various forms of anemia, such as iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B12 and folate deficiency anemia, aplastic anemia, and inherited disorders like sickle cell anemia and thalassemia.

List Of Tests

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

Measures: Red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets.

Use: General health screening, diagnosis of anemia, infections, and many other disorders.

Peripheral Blood Smear

Examines: The shape, size, and appearance of blood cells under a microscope.

Use: Diagnosing conditions like leukemia, malaria, and other blood disorders.

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)

Measures: The rate at which red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube.

Use: Detects inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and some cancers.

Reticulocyte Count

Measures: The number of young red blood cells (reticulocytes).

Use:Evaluates bone marrow function and response to anemia.

Coagulation Tests

Measures: Prothrombin Time (PT), Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT), INR.

Use: Assess blood clotting function, diagnose bleeding disorders, monitor anticoagulant therapy.

Iron Studies

Measures: Serum iron, ferritin, transferrin saturation.

Use: Diagnose types of anemia, especially iron-deficiency anemia.

Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy

Examines: Bone marrow tissue for abnormal cells.

Use: Diagnosis of leukemia, lymphoma, and other marrow diseases.

Hemoglobin Electrophoresis

Examines: Types of hemoglobin in the blood.

Use: Diagnose sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, and other hemoglobinopathies.

Flow Cytometry

Analyzes: Specific characteristics of blood or bone marrow cells.

Use: Diagnosing leukemias, lymphomas, and monitoring immune status.
